Office Holiday Party Outfits 101

by Tabitha Taft

With the holidays coming up, ’tis the season to start thinking about office holiday party outfits. Do you want to go festive with party pants, or more minimal by wearing your favorite little black dress? Whether you’re partying in the office or attending your significant other’s company soiree at a fancy outside venue, we’ve got you covered. Here are some tips to find the perfect holiday party outfit.

Dress Up Your Favorite LBD

WHBM Black Dress

A little black dress with a leather jacket, faux-fur vest, blazer, or cashmere cardigan is perfect for a cocktail party at the office. This look can easily transition from day to night by swapping out your daytime ankle boot or flat for a metallic pump or strappy sandal. If you’re wearing a classic black sheath dress, put on a festive pair of patterned or sparkling tights with a patent leather shoe.

Jewelry is an important asset for you here. Trade in your simple studs or thin chain necklace for a stack of bangles, bold collar necklace, or drop earrings to make a festive statement after work.

Suit Yourself

Dress up a smart skirt suit or tailored pants and a blouse with the same extras when putting together your office holiday party outfits. If a monochromatic office suit look is your go-to, try a colorful silk shell or ruffled blouse instead of a structured white button-down shirt. This will take the formality out of your suit ensemble and make your look more approachable and fun.

Go for Texture

If your favorite LBD feels too basic, opt for a dress with texture that’s a little more exciting. A fringed cocktail dress in a wintery shade of eggplant, navy, maroon, or hunter green is a perfect option—especially if there’s dancing. Look at textured fabrics like lace, leather, or suede, and aim for a smart silhouette like a wrap dress, a sheath, or a shirt dress.

If head-to-toe texture is too overwhelming for your figure, subtle ruffles, a pom-pom trim, a peplum, or a well-placed belt can make a simple dress more lively. A leather topper or knit cardigan is nice on colder evenings, and a shawl can be worn as a coverup. Keep the hosiery simple (nude or matte black) with an ankle bootie or metallic pump when opting for a more festive look.

Put on Your Party Pants

Swap your basic black daytime pants for party pants—think sequins, a flowy jumpsuit, or leather skinny pants. When wearing statement pants as part of your outfit, keep the rest of your look streamlined and minimal. For example, opt for a simple, monochromatic top that matches your bottoms to balance out your party pants. Keep the accessories sleek and minimal; a patent skinny stretch belt to draw attention to your waist, a stack of silver bangles, or a pair of stud earrings with Swarovski crystals can add a dash of glam to your look.

Your annual holiday party is a great opportunity to play with your look and show your peers a different side of yourself. So have fun when putting together your outfit—this is a party, after all.
